Improving First Touch for Greater Ball Control
First touch is the ability to control the ball the moment it reaches you, and it’s one of the most important skills in football. A good first touch can set you up for a pass, shot, or dribble, while a poor touch can lead to losing possession.
To develop this skill, start with simple wall drills. Pass the ball against a wall from 5–10 meters away and practice controlling it with the inside, outside, and sole of your foot. Focus on keeping the ball close to your body while preparing for your next move. Repeat this exercise 50 times for each foot.
Progress to receiving passes from a partner. Stand 15 meters apart and have your partner send balls at different speeds and angles. Control the ball using various parts of your foot, thigh, or chest. Dedicate 20 minutes daily to this drill, increasing the complexity by adding movement or requiring a pass immediately after controlling the ball.
Incorporate match-like scenarios by setting up a small-sided game where you aim to control and distribute the ball quickly under pressure. Analyze your performance to identify areas for improvement, such as controlling balls from high passes or under defensive pressure.
