Fine-Tuning Set Pieces: Free Kicks and Corners

Set pieces, such as free kicks and corners, can often decide the outcome of close matches. Perfecting your technique requires practice, precision, and a deep understanding of strategy.

For free kicks, set up a wall using cones or mannequins and practice bending the ball around it. Experiment with different techniques, such as striking with the instep for curl or with the laces for power. Aim for specific areas of the goal, like the top corners, and repeat the drill 20–30 times per session.

Corners require accurate delivery and coordination with teammates. Practice targeting specific zones in the penalty area by aiming your crosses to marked spots. Work with teammates to rehearse set-piece routines, such as near-post flick-ons or late runs to the far post.

Analyze professional matches to study how top players execute set pieces. Pay attention to the placement, speed, and trajectory of the ball. Incorporate these insights into your training sessions to refine your technique further.

Set aside at least 30 minutes twice a week for set-piece practice, focusing on both execution and decision-making. Over time, your confidence in delivering effective free kicks and corners will grow.
